About the Tournament

The Union Cup will take place in June 2019 in Dublin’s DCU Sports campus, hosted by the Emerald Warriors RFC, supported by the IRFU, and welcoming 50 teams from across Europe with an expected 1,500-1,600 attendees.

The Union Cup is a biennial international rugby union tournament for inclusive rugby teams. First hosted in Montpellier in 2005, it has since been hosted by various clubs throughout Europe, that similar to Emerald Warriors RFC, are established within the LGBT community. The tournament has previously been hosted in Copenhagen, London, Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels and Madrid.

History

The Rugby

We will exceed the expectations of all the attendees of the Union Cup 2019 by organising the largest and best Union Cup ever. We will do this by partnering with professional organisations, our community organisation and voluntary groups.

Qualifying rounds and knockout stages of quarter finals, semi finals and final. In the twelve months leading up to the Union Cup 2019 we intend to survey and listen to participating teams/players/stakeholders.

The City

Whether you come by plane or take the boat, you’ll find Dublin is easily accessible by air or sea. Flights to Dublin arrive from 180 international destinations, and direct ferries run from Holyhead and Liverpool to Dublin daily.

Dublin and rugby have been partners since the early 1850s with the founding of Ireland’s first (and some say the world’s first) rugby club based at Trinity College. Needless to say a lot has happened since then and Dublin hosts many exciting international test at the Aviva Stadium (formerly Lansdowne Road).

At a European Cup and Pro 12 level Leinster Rugby put many a visitor to the test at RDS. At a club level Dublin is home to some 50 Rugby Union Clubs who represent their communities with pride. Including Emerald Warriors RFC who have grown from Dublin’s LGBT community since 2003.
